On the first weekend of August 2024 I visited the beautiful city of Almaty. One of the days was dedicated to traveling to natural attractions – Black Canyon, Kaindy, Kolsai, Charyn Canyon.
In total, more than 600 kilometers were covered by car, more than 20 kilometers were covered on foot.
Black Canyon
It got its name due to the black color of the rocks that surround it. It has a depth of up to 100 meters and a length of about 2 km, at the bottom of the canyon flows mountain river Charyn. The distance from Almaty is 210 km.
Actually, a few points of the observation deck, a roadside cafe, and that’s where the inspection ends. Nevertheless, it is worth visiting – unusual color of rocks, color of the river will not leave indifferent connoisseurs of natural beauty. Behind the mountains behind the canyon is the border with China. The proximity of the border is also “told” by the pillboxes (long-term firing points) located along the road and not far from the canyon.
Lake Kaindy
Lake Kaindy is one of the most picturesque and unusual places in Kazakhstan, located about 280 km from Almaty, on the territory of Kegensky district of Almaty region. It is a natural monument that attracts tourists with its mysterious atmosphere and unique landscape.
History and origin
Lake Kaindy appeared as a result of a strong earthquake in 1911. The collapse of a rock blocked the river and flooded the valley. The remnants of the flooded forest still rise above the water surface, giving the lake a mystical appearance.
Features
- Unique beauty:
The lake is known for its “sunken trees”, which are trunks of Tien Shan spruce trees that rise above the water. Due to the crystal clear water, the underwater part of the trees are also visible, creating an unusual visual effect.
The color of the water varies from deep turquoise to emerald depending on the light. - Climatic Features:
The water in the lake is cold year-round, even in summer its temperature rarely exceeds 6 degrees, which keeps the wood underwater almost pristine. - Accessibility:
The lake is in a rugged area, which adds to the adventure of the trip. The last kilometers of the road require passable transportation or a hiking route.
What to see and do
- Photography and videography: Kaindy is a photographer’s dream. The contrast of the turquoise water, the greenery of the surrounding forests and the gray tree trunks creates fantastic shots.
- Hiking: Around the lake you can enjoy trekking and explore the surrounding hills and forests.
- Diving: The lake attracts divers despite the cold water. The underwater world with sunken fir trees gives the impression of traveling to a lost forest.
Travel tips
- Clothing and footwear: Take into account the cold weather even in summer, take comfortable hiking shoes, raincoats, hats. Special attention to shoes – they should be fully closed (no slates and flip-flops), comfortable, not with flat soles, otherwise the load on the foot will increase and your feet will quickly get tired, and you still need them.
- Food and water: There is minimal infrastructure on site, so it’s best to bring a supply of food and drink.
- Transportation: If you don’t have an off-road vehicle, you can use the services of local guides or organized tours from Almaty.
- Money: Since there is often no mobile operators’ communication and, accordingly, no internet connection at the place and on the way, I recommend to stock up on cash – the ascent to the lake is available by several means of transportation – by car, on horses, on foot (for the especially hardy). Toilet, some additional services – all this is paid in cash.
- First-aid kit: In case of a small traumatisation due to incorrectly chosen shoes, for example, as well as sunscreen and other medicines (I will add at the end of the article).
- Wet toilet paper: on the way you will meet toilets of different quality, do not expect that there will be everything for hygiene, so stock up with plenty of water or wet toilet paper.
- Powerbanks, extra batteries for photo and video equipment: this is a general recommendation for all points of travel, be prepared for the fact that you will be stunned by the amount of natural beauty surrounding you, and you will always want to capture it all on photo and video. Naturally, your devices, smartphones, cameras will use up battery power very quickly, so it is not superfluous to take a pverbank and additional batteries with you – the car may not have enough batteries.
Conclusion
Lake Kaindy is a real gem of Almaty region, which is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. Its unusual beauty and mysterious atmosphere will not leave anyone indifferent. This is a place where nature demonstrates its greatness and power, turning the consequences of a natural disaster into a unique miracle.
There are several observation platforms, be prepared to wait in line to get a beautiful picture – on weekends there are a lot of tourists, and everyone wants to demonstrate the beauty of the lake, while being alone in the frame).
You can go even higher, there is one more beautiful viewing platform, and also, if you have time to go along the road and go around the lake from the other side, in the place where the river flows into it.
Unfortunately, this time I did not manage to get there, perhaps next time I will correct this omission.
